Day 4 – 21 days in Europe

After a magical evening at Leo’s place we woke up earlier than normal to catch the train into Florence.

My first impression of Florence was “wow it’s SO busy!”. For only being a home to 400,000 people there are MILLIONS on the streets. At the beginning of the day, I would say excuse me every time I accidentally bump into someone. At the end of the day, it felt like my high school basketball games just throwing elbows left and right.

The city has some beautiful sights! The overlook from Piazza Michelangelo, the Piazza Duomo home to the massive Florence Cathedral, and the famous statute of David were definitely top of the list.

At one point, we were in the infamous “spanking square” where people were tide to the stone of shame and spanked publicly. There was a large statue of boar at one end of the square. The boar was flooded with crowds wanting to touch his prominent bronze snout for good luck.

I was navigating my way through the crowd when I heard a familiar accent, the DEEP south. My eyes focused in on a larger elderly gentleman who was also somewhat frantically trying to navigate through the masses. “Fran! This way Fran!” in the thickest southern accent you’ve ever heard. The situation caught my interest because Americans in Europe are entertaining. Americans over 60 and wearing their souvenirs is gold class entertainment! My eye searched the crowd for who this “Fran” when a small white headed woman screamed back at him, “Billy! IM GOING TO TOUCH THAT PIG BILLY!” I can only assume that was Fran. Fran started pushing her way through the crowd as Billy rolled his eyes big time and screamed after her, “ITS A TWO HOUR WAIT TO TOUCH THAT DANG PIG FRAN!” Fran threw a hand up as if to wave away her husbands concerns. The whole thing had me laughing out loud and missing home.

The day was a success! We made it back up to Leo’s place to enjoy another evening in the hills. Italy is still treating us very well.

Love always.
